Mahamaya Lake is a place where mountains, waterfalls, and a lake harmoniously come together. It is the second-largest artificial lake in Bangladesh, located amidst a picturesque setting. The winding lake at the foothills is extraordinarily beautiful. The primary attractions of Mahamaya Lake include the mountainous waterfall and its crystal-clear water. The surrounding green hills, adorned with a variety of birds chirping, mesmerize visitors.
To reach Mahamaya Lake Ecopark, one can get off at Thakurdighi Bazar in Durgapur Union of Mirsarai on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and take an auto-rickshaw. Alternatively, private transport can directly bring visitors to the park's entrance.
A ticket costing 30 BDT allows entry into the ecopark. Shortly after entering, rows of green trees welcome visitors. The lush greenery, the blue sky above, and the breathtaking lake below instantly relieve the fatigue of city life. At the dock, visitors can enjoy the lake's transparent water on small or large motorboats. Upon crossing the lake, one encounters a mesmerizing waterfall. Visitors can refresh themselves in the cool water of the waterfall, but knowing how to swim is essential.
According to a boat operator, renting a boat costs between 1,000 to 1,500 BDT. The boats take visitors to the waterfall and return to the dock, with short breaks for those wanting to immerse themselves in the waterfall. For kayaking enthusiasts, Mahamaya Lake is an ideal destination. Kayaks are available for rent at 200–300 BDT per hour from the dock.
Ridoan, a kayaking visitor, shared that he started his day early from Chattogram’s Oxygen area to enjoy kayaking and immerse himself in the surrounding beauty.
In the late afternoon, sitting on a boat, the surrounding hills and vast water of Mahamaya Lake create a magical atmosphere. The setting sun paints the environment in stunning hues, making the experience truly enchanting. Visitors can capture the lake’s beauty on their phones or cameras, creating unforgettable memories. During winter, the large open grounds near the lake are perfect for organizing various games and activities.
After exploring the park, visitors can dine at nearby restaurants or purchase snacks from roadside shops. Alternatively, they can bring their own food, but care must be taken to preserve the environment by avoiding littering with plastic bottles and packets.
Jahid Hasan, a former student of Chittagong University, mentioned to Banglanews, “Mahamaya Lake is exceptional for its natural beauty. Compared to Kaptai, it offers easier access and is perfect for kayaking. However, many kayaking participants are not wearing life jackets, which requires immediate attention from the authorities.”
